Syria Participates in UfM Senior Officials Meeting in Barcelona to Prepare for 30th Anniversary Ministerial Conference

The Director of the European Affairs Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the Syrian Arab Republic, Mr. Mohammad Bida Shokri, led the Syrian delegation to the Senior Officials Meeting of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), held at the organization’s headquarters in Barcelona. The meetings were convened in preparation for the upcoming ministerial conference at the end of November, which will commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Barcelona Process.

During the political dialogue session, Mr. Shokri emphasized that, even after Syria’s victory, the country continues to face challenges while striving for development and peace. He warned against attempts by certain parties to violate Syria’s sovereignty in disregard of international resolutions, and called for regional cooperation under the framework of international law.

In the technical debate, the Deputy Head of Delegation reaffirmed Syria’s readiness to engage in UfM reform efforts and to strengthen collective cooperation. He underscored the importance of improving working mechanisms and fostering unified positions on collective security in the Mediterranean region.

He also called for increased support to development projects in Syria, and highlighted the importance of enhancing direct communication between Syria and the UfM Secretariat to ensure the transparent and accountable implementation of initiatives, free from unlawful practices and third-party interference.
