Highlights of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates' remarks during a press conference held in Damascus with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and US Special Envoy to Syria Thomas Barrack:

  • The recent events in Sweida were a wound to every Syrian home. The blood of Syrians is one, and the pain of Sweida is the pain of Aleppo, Damascus, Deir ez-Zor, Homs, and all the cities.

  • As Syrians, there is no cure for our wounds but to sit together, heal them with our hands, and open a new page based on unity, reconciliation, and a common destiny.

  • The roadmap for a solution in Sweida includes holding accountable those who attacked civilians, continuing humanitarian and medical aid, compensating those affected, ensuring the return of displaced persons, restoring basic services, deploying local Interior Ministry forces to protect roads, revealing the fate of missing persons and returning abductees, and launching an internal reconciliation process involving all components.

  • We found in our brothers in Jordan and our friends in the United States a willingness to support these steps, both humanitarianly and financially, to complement our national efforts.

  • What we announce today is the beginning of a long track to rebuild bridges of communication, strengthen the unity of the nation's people, prevent the recurrence of tragedies, and restore peace of mind to our beloved governorate.

  • We present this initiative to everyone, and we hope that the language of reason and wisdom will prevail, and that the national interest will prevail over any narrow calculations, as what we are proposing is in the interest of all of Syria without exception.

  • We believe that Syrians, despite everything they have been through, are able to overcome their pain and build a safe, prosperous future for their children.

  • Sweida belongs to its people from all components, and it is the state’s duty to restore trust among them and return those displaced from it. There is a determination to restore normal life to the honorable governorate.
